Some day I’ll tell you the story of how Julia and I started our little greeting card company back in 2006. Today I’m going to tell you about our company name and why we chose an entirely different name for our card line.

Years ago when my now grown daughter was a little girl, a friend of hers exclaimed in delight when something fun surprised her, “Jumping Cracker Beans!”

Julia and I hope our cards will surprise and delight those who open them. So we named our company Jumping Cracker Beans. We didn’t think about the fact that it sounds more like a company that makes spicy bean dip than greeting cards. We didn’t realize how easy it would be to miss a letter or a word when typing such a long, nonsensical name into a Google search or URL, or how easy our silly fun name would be to confuse or forget. Looking around our trade show booth, puzzled retail store buyers asked us, “Where are the beans?” and “You’re Jumping Jack something, aren’t you?” and “Do you sell Mexican jumping beans?”

Our company name was also too long for our card display signs. Besides, since we attach something fun to each card, I also wanted to attach something fun to our signs. Our long name left no room for anything else. Brainstorming, a friend suggested tickle. And what comes to mind with the word tickle? A feather! So for years we’ve attached a real feather to our signs beside the words tickle ’em. Might have kept that as our card line name except look at the URL: www.tickleem.com…nah, that won’t do. And so here is where we landed:

Feather…check. Tickle…check. Sounds like a card line instead of spicy bean dip…check. Shorter and easier to remember than Jumping Cracker Beans…check. We think Tickle Cards ticks all our boxes for a better card line name. What do you think?
